Do I need building plans for solar panels?

Depends

Solar panels on a roof are not on the minor works list. Whether your council wants plans depends on the council and the mounting; every grid-tied system needs the municipality's electrical registration.

Building plans

Rooftop PV panels are not on the national list of minor building work, and we could not find a published Gauteng rule that sets when panels on a roof need plans. Panels that stand well above the roof, or a ground-mounted frame, are structures a council may want to see, and the roof has to carry the weight. Ask your council's building control before installing a large or raised array.

Electrical registration

Separately from building plans, municipalities require small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) systems to be registered or authorised, with an electrical certificate of compliance from a registered electrician. That is the installer's job, not the plans.
